A shikishi is a stiff, gilt-edged Japanese art board used for presentation pieces, gifts, exhibitions, and other artwork intended to be kept. In animation, these boards are typically singular works rather than editioned objects. This example depicts Gengar in watercolor, an instantly recognizable favorite among Pokémon collectors.

The artist is Gen Sato, a veteran Japanese animator whose credits span multiple generations of the Pokémon anime, including the Diamond & Pearl, Black & White, XY, and Journeys eras. That history places this work firmly on the production side of the Pokémon franchise rather than the merchandise side—an important distinction that gives the piece particular significance and greater value within the collecting market.
